Roman Yorkshire – LRAC/AHS Tour
Description
Based in the pretty seaside resort of Scarborough, this trip explores Roman and medieval remains and stunning countryside in York, Scarborough and Yorkshire. Travelling by train and bus, we’ll also enjoy cliff-top walks, medieval minsters and the beautiful cities of York and Beverley, a forgotten Diamond of East Yorkshire. Our trip is bed and breakfast, with dinner in nearby restaurants, and there will also be time for a relaxed chat over a cup of tea and cake.

Accommodation
We’ll be staying in the Bike & Boot Inn, near Scarborough station and the south beach. We’re also near the old town, castle and church, the last resting place of Anne Brontë. Bed and breakfast in a twin-share room with private facilities. They provide a full American (!) breakfast, and there are lots of good restaurants nearby for supper.

Cathy Mercer, MA, is an experienced teacher, lecturer and tour manager. She has taught in London schools and for the Open University, Birkbeck College, LRAC, City Lit and the WEA. She has led numerous study tours to Italy, Holland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, Turkey, and in the UK.

Itinerary / Study Programme
Day 1, Monday 28th June 2027
Travel to Scarborough – morning train to York from King’s Cross and then local train to Scarborough, about three hours. Settle into hotel, then enjoy a bracing walk along the beach and a convivial cup of tea with a view to stunning Scarborough Castle
Day 2, Tuesday 29th June 2027
Day trip to Beverley, the county town of East Yorkshire.
Beverley is a medieval town with a stunning minster and a fantastic museum.
We’ll have a tour of the minster, explore the medieval town and enjoy free time, with the opportunity to explore the East Yorkshire Museum – free entry and excellent café.
Day 3, Wednesday 30th June 2027
Day trip by train to York, originally a Roman town with its original Roman walls and famous minster.
We’ll get our bearings by first walking the Roman walls. York Minster has a good Roman museum in the crypt, and the Yorkshire Museum has an excellent collection. The medieval town, the Shambles, is well worth exploring.
Day 4, Thursday 1st July 2027
Morning train to RSPB Bempton, a cliff-top bird reserve with gannets, fulmars and maybe even some puffins – and fantastic views.
Afternoon free to explore Scarborough – cliff-top castle, medieval town and excellent museum and art gallery, all close to the hotel.
Day 5, Friday 2nd July 2027
Time for a leisurely breakfast before departure by train for London King’s Cross via York.
